The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has called on the Ministry of Education and other stakeholders to find amicable solution to the unhealthy strike actions facing universities in the country.
This, according to them, will help prevent further disruption to the academic and educational structures at the various universities.
A statement signed by the President of NUGS, Dennis Appiah Larbi-Ampofo, said, “the continuous inability of the Ministry of Education to resolve the issues with the striking unions is fueling a growing unrest and frustration of students and the entire educational system.”
The union, on the 5th of December, 2022 had held a National Executive Council Meeting to consider the current state of strike actions in the various tertiary institutions; and to channel their concerns to the authorities of the education ministry.
According to NUGS, tertiary education in Ghana is heading towards danger if an immediate action is not taken to save the situation.
“The consequence of these mass strike actions is devastating with major academic and administrative activities such as teaching, marking, transcript release, admission processes, graduation processes affected. Tertiary education in Ghana has almost been brought to a halt.
“Even more disheartening is the impact on private Universities who are affiliated to various public Universities now unable to graduate students due to striking actions in the mentoring public universities who are to facilitate these processes,” the statement noted.
Currently, there are 5 educational workers unions across all public universities and all colleges of education who are on strike.
The NUGS added that the frustration and unrest is real and urged managers of the educational sector to be concerned about the damaging impact of these strike actions on the country’s future.
“The union will continue to engage various stakeholders in our bid to help solve this impasse,” the statement assured.
