1 district 1 factory: GAWU vindicated – Edward Kareweh taunts govt

August 5, 2018
Reading Time: 2 mins read

The General Secretary of the General Agricultural Workers Union (GAWU), Mr. Edward Kareweh, feels vindicated after cautioning that the ‘1 district 1 factory’ promised by the government was unrealistic. The Senior Minister Yaw Osafo Marfo had admitted in a speech on Tuesday that “not every district will have factory within the four years”. Speaking on 3FM’s Sunrise on Wednesday, the General Secretary of GAWU reiterated that building a factory in every district by the government at all cost can’t be possible. “Building a factory is good but as to every district to have one I see it not be realistic,” Mr Kareweh stressed. He said, factories are not like schools where you build and expect many people to enroll in the future, noting, factories ought to be ran on daily and weekly basis at a certain minimum so that they can be viable. So if raw materials for a factory is not continuously available, of course the factory will run into trouble, he remarked. Mr. Edward Kareweh likened the situation to what National Democratic Congress (NDC) promised Ghanaians that they will build 200 SHS in four years but could not build all before they left office in January 2017. “The raw materials are agro-based, they are bulky and perishable so to store them is another challenge” he stated. Mr. Edward Kareweh observed that when the government went to the grounds to assess things, they have realized that one district one factory is impossible and that it needs to be reviewed. “This is a vindication of what GAWU said early on…Even though water is good to all mankind this does not mean everybody must have a borehole” The GAWU is therefore emphasising that not every district necessarily needs a factory or a dam.
