Agona West MCE stops MP from renovating Swedru Town Hall?

November 12, 2022
Reading Time: 3 mins read

Attempts by the Member of Parliament for Agona West to renovate the dilapidated Agona Swedru Town Hall have  allegedly been scuttled by the Municipal Chief Executive of Agona West Municipal Assembly. Residents have over the years been calling on the Assembly and the central government to refurbish the hall because its deplorable state was posing health risk to them as well as being a deathtrap. Mrs. Cynthia Morrison, then the NPP parliamentary candidate for the area responded to their cry by promising to get the place fixed. Mrs. Morrison who is also the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection upon winning the 2016 parliamentary election decided to take the necessary steps to uplift the status of the hall to an enviable edifice in the Central region. Engineers and architects, from within and outside the Assembly, were sent to inspect the structure and to give the appropriate recommendations. Based on their recommendations, the MP officially informed the Assembly at its 2nd General Assembly Meeting in 2017 at the same hall on steps taken to renovate the place. For unknown reason, 3News learnt that the assembly engineers were allegedly ordered by the MCE, Mrs.  Justina Assan, to stop work. After several back and forth, the MP wrote another letter to the MCE to officially inform the Assembly and copied the Assemblyman of the Area of her decision to renovate the Swedru Town Hall as promised. The MP again wrote to the Ministry for Special Initiatives and copied the Municipal Assembly for the same purpose. After getting the architectural design done for a smooth take off and having mobilised funds and materials for the project, the Assembly, through the Municipal Coordinating Director, on 30th November 2018 wrote to the MP and subtly asked her to stop renovating the hall. “The Assembly is much grateful and wish to commend your continuous efforts towards the advancement of the Municipality. We wish to kindly draw your attention to the fact that the Assembly had already taken steps to renovate the said Town Hall and as such procurement processes are at an advanced stage. “However, the Assembly would gladly welcome and appreciate your support in other areas of development such as education, health and other social interventions,” the letter read in part. Some residents are surprised the Assembly headed by  Mrs. Justina Assan would frustrate such a good gesture from the MP. Source: 3news.com | Ghana]]>
