Akufo-Addo’s insistence that chiefs stand up to greet him worrying, disrespectful – Mahama

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, has condemned President Akufo-Addo’s recent interaction with a chief in the Oti Region, describing it as unpresidential and disrespectful to traditional leaders.

In a social media post on Monday, April 29, Mr Mahama expressed concern over President Akufo-Addo’s conduct, stating that political observers should take it seriously.

He emphasised that the President’s actions undermine the dignity of chiefs in the country.

According to Mr Mahama, failure to rebuke President Akufo-Addo for his behaviour could lead to further disrespectful actions in the remaining days of his presidency.

The former President called on Ghanaians to be vigilant and hold their leaders accountable for upholding the values of respect and dignity, especially towards traditional authorities.

The incident has sparked debate among Ghanaians, with some expressing disappointment in the President’s behaviour while others defend it as a cultural misunderstanding.

“The almost eight years of Nana Addo/Bawumia have done extensive damage to our democracy. As the clock ticks towards the end of his mandate, the President’s attitude and utterances give much cause for concern.”

“His recent insistence that chiefs stand up to greet him should be a matter of serious consternation for political watchers,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mr Mahama launched a scathing critique against President Akufo-Addo, accusing him of attempting to undermine Ghana’s constitution and manipulate the political landscape to benefit his favoured successor.

His criticism came in response to a statement by Akufo-Addo, where he declared his refusal to transfer power to an opponent he had previously defeated.

“He also recently stated that he cannot be succeeded by somebody he has defeated in previous elections. This connotes an arrogant nature and smacks an inherently anti-democratic personality, undermining the fundamental principle of the peaceful transition of power.”

“Nana Addo should be reminded that only the votes of the good people of Ghana and the will of the Almighty God will determine who succeeds him. This reaffirms the people’s power in shaping our nation’s future,” he added.
