Being loud doesn’t help – NDC SA Council Chair slams Wontumi, warns of day of accountability

Chairman of the Council of Elders of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in South Africa, Mr. Benjamin Kofi Quashie, has advised Ghanaian politicians to adopt humility in public service, warning that arrogance and loud posturing will not shield anyone from eventual accountability.

Speaking in an interview on Ghasa Radio, Mr. Quashie said: “Because, you see, at the end of the day, being loud doesn’t help as a politician because as President Mahama indicated, you are there to serve the people.

“You’re not better than the people. But when you make it look as if you are better than the people, when the day of accountability comes, when the day of reckoning comes — nobody should be seen crying like Wontumi was crying.”

The NDC Chairman used the platform to take on Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), accusing him of epitomizing the reckless extravagance and arrogance that plagued the previous administration.

Benjamin Quashie cited a past incident where Wontumi flaunted gold bars on live television as an example of political arrogance.

“He went to a studio with gold bars, showing off to the world. Talking about how gold is power. He claimed to have over 99 houses in Kumasi and several estates,” he recounted.

Mr. Quashie argued that Wontumi’s misconduct is typical of the larger rot within the NPP and Akufo-Addo’s leadership.
“If you see the way the NPP and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo have dissipated public funds and resources, you will cry for Mother Ghana,” he said.

Mr. Quashie further discussed Wontumi’s widely reported legal troubles, emphasizing that no individual is above the law and that the legal system must be allowed to hold all offenders accountable, no matter their political affiliation or status.

“When you tell the NPP the truth, they don’t like it. But accountability must come. This is just the beginning,” he warned.

Mr. Quashie also mocked past claims by Wontumi about his intent to purchase English football club Chelsea, questioning the maturity and priorities of some public officials.

“Sometimes, you hear these people speak and wonder what they drink before going on air,” he said, adding that Ghanaians deserve sober, service-oriented leaders, not boastful ones.
