The Electoral Commission (EC) on Saturday gave its consent to Madam Lydia Alhassan, the New Patriotic Congress Member of Parliament (MP) Aspirant for Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency to contest the by-election.

The by-election is scheduled to take place on Thursday, January 31, 2019.

The EC gave the authority to the aspirant after she filed her nomination form with the Ayawaso District Office located at the Electoral Commission’s headquarters in Accra.

The seat became vacant after the death of her husband, Mr Emmanuel Kyeremanteng Agyarko, the sitting Member of Parliament on Wednesday, November 21, 2018.

Madam Alhassan arrived at the premise of the Commission at 1330 hours, with the party executives and supporters to present the forms.

The motor riders were not left out, as they show some glimpses of riding skills from the party’s headquarters to the Commission to the admiration of bystanders.

Mr Charles Kwame Osei, the Deputy Returning Officer, Ayawaso West Wuogon, who received the forms, told the Ghana News Agency that, the Commission was satisfied with the requirements on the nomination forms after its appraisal.

“After going through the forms, they were satisfied with the provisions of the forms and has granted her the nod to campaign ahead of the impending by-election”.

He said as required, the NPP aspirant submitted a cheque for GH¢10,000.00 as filing fee, two registered voters’ signatures on the forms as a proposer and seconder, respectively.

This was supported by 18 other registered voters in the Constituency as assenting to the nomination.

Other documents are two copies of a recent post card-size photograph taken against a red background, revealing the full face and ears of the candidate.

He commended the supporters for comporting themselves and urged them to engage in descent campaign to advance the democratic credentials of the country.

Madam Alhassan, in an interview with Ghana News Agency after submitting the forms, thanked the leadership of the party and the supporters for the awesome support she received from the primaries till the submission of the forms.

She pledged to continue from the legacy of her husband adding that ‘this could be possible with the support of all and sundry in the constituency’.

“I will continue from where my husband started, from road construction, scholarship scheme for students and market women, healthcare and sanitation”, she said.

The NPP Aspirant said prioritising on sanitation is a goal because a decent environment was critical in addressing the health of the area and urged the electorates in the Constituency to vote for her to put her plans into action.

The EC on Thursday, January 10, opened nominations for the aspirants in the Constituency and ended on Saturday, January 12, 2019.

The EC had so far given the nod to four MP Aspirants to contest the by-election in the constituency.

They are Mr Delali Kwasi Brempong, representing the National Democratic Congress; Madam Lydia Alhassan, representing the New Patriotic Party; Mr William Dowokpor, for the Peoples Progressive Party; and Mr Clement Boadi, representing the Liberal Party of Ghana.

Mr Dowokpor pledged to have constant engagement with the constituents, adding that, he would be the ‘miracle candidate’ among the aspirants.

Mr Boadi said he represent the youth and would focus on sanitation, youth employment and institute a consultative committee with the constituency members
