Ghana and Morocco sign groundbreaking visa-free travel agreement

Ghana and Morocco sign groundbreaking visa-free travel agreement

In a major diplomatic milestone, Ghana and Morocco have officially signed a bilateral visa-free travel agreement that allows Ghanaian citizens to visit Morocco without the need for traditional visas.

The policy, which takes immediate effect, is set to boost trade, tourism, education, and cultural exchange between the two nations.

The announcement was made by Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, in a Facebook post following a two-day working visit to Morocco.

The agreement, reached with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Nasser Bourita, replaces the conventional visa process with a fast-tracked online travel authorisation system.

“This is one of the significant agreements reached yesterday with the Foreign Minister of Morocco,” Ablakwa stated. “The borders in Africa must not be allowed to divide us — they can be bridges of connectivity.”

The new arrangement introduces a streamlined digital application system that provides travel authorisation within 24 hours, effectively eliminating the need for embassy appointments or long visa processing times. Ghanaian travellers can now obtain approval from the comfort of their homes, a change expected to ease both short-term tourism and longer-term exchanges.

Immediate Diplomatic and Economic Impact

The visa-free regime is seen as a cornerstone of broader efforts to enhance bilateral cooperation in key areas such as trade, education, agriculture, and cultural relations. With direct flights already operating between Accra and Casablanca, and additional air routes expected, both nations stand to benefit economically from increased movement of people and goods.

“This is a timely step that will open doors for deeper engagement,” said a government official involved in the discussions. “Whether it’s Ghanaian entrepreneurs exploring opportunities in Morocco, or tourists from both countries sampling each other’s rich cultures—from Moroccan architecture to Ghanaian food recipes—this agreement encourages mutual understanding.”

Moroccan officials also used the occasion to dispel circulating social media rumours of alleged violence against sub-Saharan Africans in Morocco.

Morocco’s Ambassador to Ghana, Imane Ouaadil, reassured Ghanaians that “all Africans living in Morocco are safe,” adding that recent viral videos were misleading and not reflective of the current situation.

Though the agreement is already operational, it is expected to go through formal parliamentary ratification processes in both countries in the coming weeks.

As Ghana and Morocco move forward with implementing the agreement, stakeholders in tourism, education, and commerce are preparing to seize the new opportunities created by easier travel. The deal is being hailed as a step forward in breaking down intra-African travel barriers and building a more connected continent.
