The Foreign Minister, her two deputies and the GUNSA delegation[/caption]
Government says it is doing everything within its abilities to ensure the country’s youth do not migrate to other countries for non-existing or demeaning jobs.
According to the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, ongoing social interventions and many others yet to be rolled-out would ensure the youth are guaranteed meaningful socio-economic livelihoods and a better future.
The Minister was speaking in Accra when a delegation from the Ghana United Nations Students and Youth Association (GUNSA) paid courtesy call on her to discuss wide-range of issues relating to young people and the United Nations.
The Minister is also the Chief Patron of GUNSA, following a long -standing convention since the association was founded in 1963.
She told the visiting delegation the government led by President Nana Akuffo-Addo has taken it upon itself to offer better and guaranteed future for the youth. “We have a responsivity to ensure the youth feel there is a future here in Ghana”, the Minister said.
On the activities of GUNSA, the Foreign Minister narrated how vibrant and indispensable it was many years ago and charged the new leadership of the organisation to revive it and position it properly. “I have known about GUNSA since secondary school days and it was a very vibrant organisation”, she recalled.
“Government relies heavily on groups such as GUNSA to reach out to the youth who form substantial portion of our population on many development-oriented programmes, ideas and issues”, the Minister added.
She asked the leadership of GUNSA to help propagate the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Agenda 2063, Africa’s version of the SDGs to students and the youth.
The National President of GUNSA, Mr Kwashie Klu-Duvor who led the 5-member delegation commended the cordial and supportive relationship that has existed between the association and the Ministry over the years and hoped the renewed relations will deepen collaborations.
Present at the meeting were the two deputy Ministers, Charles Owiredu and Mohammed Hahibu Tijani.
