Kwesi Nyantakyi resigns as GFA boss

Mr. Nyantakyi is alleged to have used the name of the President and other government officials to take bribes[/caption] The beleaguered President of the Ghana Football Association, Kwesi Nyantakyi has succumbed to pressure and resigned from his post. Mr. Nyantakyi’s resignation comes barely hours after the world football governing body, FIFA banned him for 90 days. READ MORE On Thursday, Information Minister Mustapha Abdul-Hamid announced plans by government to dissolve the FA, which Mr. Nyantakyi until Friday headed. READ: Government dissolves Ghana Football Association Mr. Nyantakyi caught on camera negotiating a deal with undercover journalists using the name of the president. He was also captured seeking sponsorship for the GFA where he allegedly shown the intent to fleece his own association. An investigative documentary on corruption in football which featured Mr. Nyantakyi and some top football officials in Ghana and Africa in general was first screened on Wednesday June 6. “After a meeting of the Executive Committee this afternoon I decided to resign as President of the Ghana Football Association,” the former GFA boss said on Friday. Mr. Nyantakyi sated in his resignation letter that the undercover journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas “deceived me into thinking they were genuine persons interested in investing in our Country”. He subsequently apologised to the president, Nana Akufo-Addo for dragging his and that of some government officials into his “indiscretion” when he met the would-be investors, whom he described as “scammers”. “I wish to apologise to my family, work colleagues, friends, associates and the people of Ghana for the disappointment my indiscretion has caused then). This is by no means an admission of wrong doing for issues on the video. “In the coming days, I would address the media on issues raised on the video. ” Meanwhile the Criminal Investigation Department of the Ghana Police is investigating Mr. Nyantakyi after a request was made to them by President Akufo-Addo.
