Meet Esenam: The Female taxi driver ‘changing the game’ [video]

Esenam is one of the few women in Ghana who are daring to survive in the male dominated taxi business in the country. He has very amazing academic credentials holding a Master’s degree in Family Resource Management and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Work both from the University of Ghana, Legon. On a regular day, Esenam sets out to work at 8 am after dropping off her children at school and washing her car a washing bay. According to Esenam, it is challenging task being a woman in a male dominated business but she says she is poised “to challenge the status quo”. She is determined to change the face of Ghana’s transport service system by training more women women to take up positions as drivers in the transport service sector. She says she wants to raise the bar in customer service delivery in the transportation industry. Esenam tells our reporter Sarah Parku about projects she is currently working on. “Aside what I do as a taxi driver, I’m currently working on two projects. The first project is dubbed ‘Women moving the city project’ and this project is training 72 women to drive commuter buses here in Accra, popularly known as the Aayalolo buses” “The second project just started and it’s dubbed ‘Women moving trucks’ which are both funded by GIZ Ghana and Scania West Africa and West Africa Transport Academy” she added.
