Parliament has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of the Member of Parliament (MP) for Akwatia, Ernest Kumi.
The first-time lawmaker, who represented the New Patriotic Party (NPP), passed away after a brief illness that had kept him away from parliamentary proceedings for several days.
The news of Mr. Kumi’s passing was met with shock and sorrow among Members of Parliament during today’s sitting, with Joy News’ Parliamentary Affairs Correspondent, Kweku Asante, reporting a somber and subdued atmosphere in the chamber.
Mr. Kumi’s death marks a significant loss for both Parliament and the opposition NPP, as he had recently been at the heart of a high-profile legal tussle concerning the legitimacy of his election.
In February 2025, the Koforidua High Court found him guilty of contempt for defying an interim injunction that barred him from presenting himself to be sworn in as MP. The injunction had been part of an ongoing legal challenge to the outcome of the 2024 parliamentary elections in Akwatia. His failure to appear before the court led to the issuance of a bench warrant for his arrest, raising tensions over the rule of law and parliamentary privilege.
However, in a dramatic twist, the Supreme Court overturned his conviction just weeks before his untimely death, giving him a legal victory that was widely covered in the media.
The late MP had shown promise as a rising figure within the NPP.
His sudden demise not only leaves a vacuum in representation for the people of Akwatia but also poses political and procedural questions for the House moving forward.
