NPP Primary: Election Committee orders expunging of dismissed members’ names; over 280 to be affected in Agona West

Former Minister Mrs. Cynthia Morrison would be affected by the directive

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Presidential Elections Committee has directed that all dismissed members be removed from the party’s voter album ahead of the upcoming presidential primary.

The directive, contained in a circular signed by William Yamoah, Secretary to the NPP Presidential Elections Committee, instructed all constituency election management teams to ensure that names of members who have forfeited their membership through disciplinary action are expunged from the album to safeguard the integrity of the primary.

“Flag delegates or executives who have forfeited their membership pursuant to article 3(9) (I) and indicate “forfeiture” next to their names…No replacement of delegates,” the party said in the circular dated October 13, 2025.

A significant number of NPP delegates would be affected by the directive as hundreds of party members were dismissed in the aftermath of the 2024 parliamentary and presidential elections for engaging in anti-party activities. They now stand disqualified from participating in the upcoming exercise.

“Pursuant to article 3(9) (1) of the Party’s constitution, all members who have forfeited their membership are excluded from taking part in the process,” the latest directed emphasized.

Cynthia Morrison and 288 Members Forfeit Membership

The order comes barely a year after the NPP formally dismissed former Member of Parliament for Agona West, Mrs. Cynthia Mamle Morrison and 288 members of the Agona West constituency for breaching the party’s constitution.

In a letter dated 16th December 2024, signed by Constituency Chairman Alhaji Gibrine Tanko, the former MP and her supporters were said to have violated Article 3(9)(1) of the NPP constitution by contesting or supporting independent candidates in the 2024 general elections.

Mrs. Morrison, who served as Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection under President Nana Akufo-Addo, was accused of standing as an independent candidate against the party’s officially elected parliamentary aspirant.

The Agona West constituency executives unanimously adopted her expulsion at an Expanded Executive Committee meeting held on December 15, 2024, attended by the Municipal Chief Executive, constituency officers, founding members, elders, patrons, and electoral area coordinators.

Party’s Directive Tightens Control

The NPP’s latest directive, insiders say, is part of efforts to sanitize the electoral roll and ensure only bona fide members participate in the presidential primaries scheduled across the country.

The Elections Committee’s memo noted that the move was necessary “to maintain fairness, transparency, and discipline within the party’s internal election process.”

Constituency election coordinators have therefore been instructed to liaise with regional secretariats and disciplinary committees to verify the membership status of all persons appearing in the constituency albums before the election day.

In Agona West, this verification process means that the names of Cynthia Morrison and her 288 dismissed supporters will be struck out of the delegates’ register, preventing them from voting or observing the polls.
