Rugby: Ghana’s bid to host 2019 Silver Cup gets boost from Golden Tulip

June 6, 2018
Reading Time: 3 mins read

file picture: Golden Tulip has been of immense support to Ghana Rugby[/caption] The groundswell of support for Ghana to host 2019 Rugby Africa Silver Cup has gotten yet another boost from one of Ghana’s the luxurious hospitality facility, Gold Tulip Hotel. The gesture comes on the back of a recent support – logistics and accommodation – Golden Tulip gave Ghana Rugby which greatly helped Ghana to host and win the 2018 Rugby Africa Bronze Cup. When Ghana Rugby Football Union (GRFU), led by its President Herbert Mensah, presented the Bronze Cup to the hotel on Tuesday, the General Manager of Golden Tulip Hotel, Paul Kavanagh surprised the team with another commitment. “When we made the presentation, Paul Kavanagh let out of the bag the fact that Golden Tulip have agreed to back Ghana Rugby in our bid to host the Silver Cup in Ghana next year, 2019,” excited Mr. Mensah told 3news.com. “I mean that is massive, that is absolutely massive. I think I can just thank Golden Tulip, thank Paul Kavanagh for it,” he stated. Mr. Mensah was certainly not oblivious of the fact that there are other hurdles to surmount judging by the challenges his leadership encountered in the successful host of the Bronze Cup, but was confident the gesture pushes Ghana Rugby closer to winning the bid. “It doesn’t mean we will win the bid, but we know we will present the best accommodation facility for any country wanting to host a tournament of this nature in the continent of Africa. The marriage between Ghana Rugby and the Golden Tulip is something I am immensely proud of,” he acknowledged. Describing Mr Kavanagh as an “extra ordinary general manager”, Mr. Mensah relayed the impression the participating countries had about the hotel, which they said “was the best hotel they have stayed for competition purposes”. He also recalled how the four nation tournament held at the Nduom Stadium in Elmina after a setback in Accra, helped to promote Ghana, adding “this is a great time to be a Ghanaian, not only football but the lesser sports”. Relishing his dream of getting Ghana to host the Silver Cup next year after this few years of being at the helm of affairs at Ghana Rugby, Mr. Mensah was hopeful “with Golden Tulip at the forefront it is surely a winning team”. He further remarked, “As I said you have to win off the field in order to win on the field; integrity, compliance, the kind of people you get involved, the vision and understanding that every sport is global, it is not uniquely as it’s about everybody else to.” Mr. Mensah was also grateful to companies such as Interplast, Gino related products, and Panafrican for the support given Ghana Rugby thus far.
