Seek career counselling before making a choice of profession – Students told

July 7, 2018
Reading Time: 2 mins read

Mr. Gbenga Odeyemi, the Managing Director of the FBN Bank, Ghana, has underscored the need for students to seek career counselling in order to make informed decisions about their future profession.

Mr. Odeyemi gave the advice at the St. Thomas Aquinas Senior High School as part of activities marking the Bank’s Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability Week.

“Touching Lives: You First”, was the theme chosen for the celebration, which saw more than 6,000 students being sensitised on various career choices.

The Bank held career guidance and counselling sessions in schools across the country as part of Week.

Mr. Odeyemi said the Bank introduced career guidance and counselling initiative to correct and stem the confusion that students were often saddled with when making decisions about their career.

Mr. Odeyemi urged the students to begin their career decision-making process with a full understanding of their individual strengths and weaknesses.

He further urged them to endeavour to avoid common mistakes associated with making career choices, including peer pressure, yielding to pressure from parents, inadequate information about their preferred career, ignoring their passion, and failure to select the right courses relevant to the profession.

The Managing Director underlined the need for students to consider factors such as individual skills, knowledge base in a particular area, their interest and kind of jobs they would like to do in the future.

FBN Bank, Ghana is a subsidiary of First Bank of Nigeria Limited.
