Year of Road: 65 different roads under construction in Northern Region

The Minister for Roads and Highways Mr. Amoako Attah says a total of 65 roads covering 916 kilometers are under construction in the Northern region.

He mentioned that procurement processes for 80 roads are ongoing.

The minister was in the region to inspect some road constructions in the Northern and Savannah regions.

The minister’s first point of call was to inspect work on the 84 kilometers Tamale-Salaga road.

Ganem construction, one of the contractors working on the road was on site.

However, work on the 59 kilometers portion of the road awarded to Engineers and Planners was yet to see any work done.

From there, the team moved to inspect work on the 25 kilometers Salaga township roads before moving to inspect work on the Salaga-Bimbilla and Salaga-Kpandai roads.

The minister, after the inspection, said he was satisfied with with work done by the contractors.

The minister later briefed the media in Tamale where Mr. Amoako Attah said Northern region alone covers 6, 834 kilometers of the total road network in Ghana.

Out of this number, 916 kilometers comprising 65 roads are under construction.

In the Tamale Metropolis and Sagnarigu Municipal alone, 66 kilometers of roads are under construction.

“Total length of highways under construction stands at 560.3 km, total urban roads 136 km and total feeder roads 220 km,” he said.

Mr. Amoako Attah admitted, not all roads in the region have been captured but assured that steps are being taken to put them into lots to be awarded.

He gave the assurance the ministry will ensure value for money.

Tamale interchange

The minister ended his tour of the region by inspecting work on the Tamale interchange under the Sinohydro projects.

He noted, 40 percent of the interchange has been done.

He was hopeful, work will continue aggressively to meet the stipulated deadline.

Yapei, Buipe and Daboya Bridges

Mr. Amoako Attah revealed, a 68 million Ghana cedis facility is being mobilized for the award of contracts for two new bridges at Yapei and Buipe respectively.

He explains, the two bridges will be positioned at different places so it doesn’t disrupt movement.

The existing ones are also being maintained.

Meanwhile, plans are far advanced to work on the Daboya bridge to serve as an alternative route in place of the Yapei and Buipe bridges.
