10 years on: Adentan footbridge project ‘work in progress’ – MCE

September 11, 2018
Reading Time: 3 mins read

The Chief Executive of the Adentan Municipal Assembly, Alex Nii Noi Adumuah claims footbridges that have been abandoned in his area for about 10 years, causing loss of lives through road accidents, are “work in progress”. When Johnnie Hughes host of Community Connect on 3FM probed further for a satisfactory answer, he insisted, “I can only talk about the one year I have been here, but I do hope it will be sooner than later” to be completed. The MCE was reacting to incessant distress calls from residents, pedestrians, motorists, and market women to Community Connect, about the 5.6 kilometer Madina-Adentan stretch. According to the Adentan municipal assembly boss, the project falls within the purview of the Roads and Highway Authority and “it will be fair, to ask from that angle too”. When asked what meaningful consultation his office has had with the Roads and Highways minister Kwasi Amoako Attah and his deputy, Anthony Carbo, he said: “You should ask them this, but in this particular instance, what I can tell you is that, we have been begging for these bridges to be done”.  He however didn’t dispute the relevance of the footbridges to the people and said steps were being taken to get two bridges functional. Last week, when Johnnie Hughes, the 2017 RTP Radio Development Host of the Year, visited the site with his team, he observed how pedestrians of all ages waited endlessly just to cross the road. The team also saw how some pedestrians threw caution to the wind by scaling the dwarf wall partitioning the busy dual carriage road, risking their lives in the process. Those who could afford some stamina walked a long distance to cross under the traffic light. A head porter, Asana, who spoke to the team in pidgin claims “the way make long and we no dey get anything if we carry load, because we use all the money for hospital. We beg, make dey finish the bridge”. The MP for Madina and then Minister for Inner City and Zongo Development, and Boniface Abubakar Saddique had told the media that the government owes contractors working on the project – China Water and Electrical Construction Company Limited – some $45m and GHC 80m for works done on that road and country, hence the delay. who would your most humble servant be?

At a time when power is flaunted more than it is earned, we rise with a different call: #TumiNniSuban—Power without character is nothing. We are done with leaders who wear authority like a costume but lack the soul to serve. Leadership must reflect the people’s dignity, not diminish it. So we ask If elections were held today, who would your most humble servant be?
