Even before the first pay hit their accounts, some beneficiaries of the Nation Builders Corps (NABCO) are pleading with the government to increase their allowance.
The graduates have been enrolled onto a seven modules programme and are expected to be on it for the next three years with a monthly allowance of GH₵700.
About 100,000 NACOB trainees were graduated on Wednesday October 17, 2018 at the Black Star Square in Accra for the modules: Feed Ghana, Educate Ghana, Revenue Ghana, Heal Ghana, Enterprise Ghana, Digitise Ghana and Governance Ghana.
At the commissioning ceremony, President Nana Akufo-Addo admonished the beneficiaries to “help build a nation you will be proud of”.
He therefore cautioned them, “Your monthly stipend of GH₵700 is not free; you must earn every pesewa of it”.
All the beneficiaries Onua FM spoke to after the graduation commended the government for the initiative aimed at giving skilled training to unemployed graduates.
Whilst some remarked that the 700 cedis a month is “manageable” after spending about three years at home without job, others pressed for upward adjustment of their allowance.
“The program will help the Ghanaian youth, but what we are appealing is that if they can do something about the allowance. Even though half a loaf is better than none, since it is three years the pay can be made 900 or 1000 so that we can use some for one or two things but I believe this programme is the best for the youth.”
